Wifi networks suffer from interference of nearby networks. While you cannot get rid of nearby networks, you can optimize the settings on your wireless access point or router to achive better client compatibility and minimize interference.
There are many guides online with wifi “best practices”. One that I find particularly helpful is provided by Apple, it was recommended by my resident apple expert. While the article title lists iOS and OS X, it applies equally well to all wifi compatible products – Windows, Android, etc.
Thanks to the folks at Apple for this well written simple wifi configuration advice. If all wireless networks follow guidelines like these, we can expect a little better connectivity on the client side.
